Daycycle 2 [ November 4-6 ]

DAYCYCLE 2

[ November 4-6 ]

Morning

Breakfast goes mostly without incident this morning, though some might find some unpleasant pieces of hardware in their soylent red this morning.  It appears a drone, blinded by an inappropriate use of upholstery, crashed and landed in a vat of the mixing stuff yesterday.  On the plus side, there might be some useful tech salvageable for those willing to break it out and piece it together.

As a special, you are still being singled out by the majority of the other Troubleshooters, though two or three offer congratulations to Parker and Bucky Barnes on their mission yesterday. It’s rare that one contestant makes it through an entire run of Trouble Survivor, let alone two.  If their behavior hadn’t been quite so eccentric, MC might have thought of offering them a permanent spot on the entertainment network.  As it is, they are back in the Troubleshooting pool with everyone with the added benefit of being minor celebrities.

Your Briefing Officer is brief, as always, in assigning missions.  Today’s fare is much less interesting.

Troubleshooter Team: Alec Hardison & Maria Hill

Mission:  Shortly before her fatal accident, Janice Remes performed a complete inventory of Warehouse 93, but they still haven’t forwarded her written reports to Production Control.  We’ve made numerous electronic requests for information, but they keep telling us the report isn’t there.  Go to the warehouse and find her report so we can bring Warehouse’s 93’s incompetence to Internal Security’s attention.

Troubleshooter Team: Natasha Romanoff & Matt Ferrall

Mission:There was a mutant attack on a guard outside of the Armed Forces Sector last night.  The mutant scum was injured in the scuffle, but managed to escape with valuable intel.  Your mission is to track down the injured mutant and retrieve the intel.

All other Troubleshooters:  You are to report to your Service Firm positions for the day, until called on for Troubleshooter duty.

Intel

  • Corpore Metal is recruiting again.  Members are most recognizable by their metal upgrades.  Metal upgrades are not traitorous, unless they are beyond current allowed specifications.

  • The vending machine on the 24th floor was distributing exploding bottles of Bouncy Bottle Beverage.  This is dangerous when opened near a flame.  Inspect all bouncy bottle beverages you see and request information on it’s origin.

Afternoon:

The afternoon is blessedly free of explosions or mishaps.  At 1600 Corridor Running takes place in the RED sleeping corridors, as races are held to see who can beat each other’s best times.  This results in some infighting among the RED Troubleshooters, but is casualty free.

Evening:

At approximately 1800 the Armed Forces Entertainers put on a show in the Commissary for citizens of all clearance levels.  A banner is hung across the front of a stage that reads “Winning the War on Treason for over 100 yearcycles!”  The show consists of dancers, singers and a celebrity visit from everyone’s favorite talk show host, Teela O’Malley.  Sleep aid gas is expelled into the sleeping quarters at 2100.

Bucky had had his fill of drone exploits the day before. He passed his tray over to his roommate, not even bothering to take the food from Dick's tray after. He had spent the morning staring at the PDC that was apparently a necessary tool for his future career as a threat assessor and trying to learn how it worked without getting assistance from the strangers he really didn't trust to begin with.

As far as roommates went, Dick was fine, and Bucky had no problems with him. He didn't think of Dick as nearly as much of a threat as the non-special REDs in their corridor.

"Knock yourself out. I'm trying to cut back on the metal in my diet." A few minutes later there was a frustrated growl from the soldier whose prosthetic arm was tucked into his jumpsuit pocket as it had been all morning. He was trying to make the PDC function with one hand and had managed to confuse the hyphens and periods for digital morse code. That may have still proven useful to the soldier were he not inputting it into what was essentially a notepad function on the device.

"How do you change frequency on this damn radio?"

Dick took the offered tray with a snicker at his roommate's joke. They hadn't really had a chance to talk much yet, not with how quickly they all fell asleep (and he really had a problem with that whole sleeping gas thing), but the guy seemed alright.

He extricated the pieces stuck in Bucky's soylent and tucked them away in his pockets with the others, glancing sidelong at his roommate occasionally as he worked. The other man seemed to be having trouble with something, but Dick didn't like to but in - it wasn't until Bucky actually spoke that he leaned over to take a look at it.

"Well, uh, that's not the radio for a start..."

"I have seen people talking into them, but I can't figure out how to change it to find the frequency people are talking on. And I'm not sure it's sending any of the messages I have tried to tap out." He had at least figured out what the dot and dashes were for. Or so it seemed to him.

He didn't mind seeing Dick outside of their shared room. He seemed like a good man. He didn't seem that young to Bucky and while he didn't know what Dick wanted with the drone scraps, he was curious about it. They were no use to him aside from as a weapon, and they were not ideal for that. He needed a proper weapon. Something at least sharper and more durable than scrap metal.

"How do you get a message out?"

Tap out? Was he trying... was he trying to send messages in morse code? Dick blinked at him, trying to find a polite way of expressing his disbelief, especially since the guy didn't even look that old. He couldn't think of one, and maybe he was just from further back than Dick was, the timelines for specials in this place seemed a bit confused, so he decided to just put that aside and try and help him - especially since he'd handed over the pieces of drone easily enough.

"Okay so you press this button here, and then this one," he pointed them out on his own device and then on Bucky's "Then you choose who you want to send a message to, and when you press this button here the keyboard comes up, then you just type it out. If you want to have a conversation, you can press this button and it calls them. Make sense?"

It was surprisingly not that hard of a concept to grasp. It was unfamiliar, but not impossible. He had used a typewriter a few times in his life, and while a mobile phone wasn't an idea he had heard of, a mobile communications radio was. He had already figured out that was in some way what this smaller object was.

"Yes, I think so. What if the unit or person you are trying to make contact with is not listed here?" He was looking at the list of contacts with interest, fascinated by what Dick was showing. These devices were suddenly far more useful than his original idea of them.

"You can add people," he explained, tapping a couple of buttons to show Bucky where he could "but you need their contact details, almost everybody is listed so if they aren't..." you probably shouldn't be contacting them, but he was pretty sure there must be a way, he knew that kind of person, they'd have arranged for that.

"If there's anybody else you want to contact you'll probably have to contact them in person first, or wait for them to contact you."

Bucky made a note to try it out with Steve once they had established their week of information gathering. He nodded along with Dick's explanation, searching through the contact list with a bit of unguarded fascination at the touch screen. It was something he was going to need to learn either with the phone sitting on a surface or using only his thumb, but he was determined to figure out how it worked.

Thanks to all the HappiTime he had been flooding his system with, he could not remember if they had introduced themselves to each other beyond just acknowledging the other person's existence. He offered Dick a smile and a hand shake.

"Thank you. I think I will be able to figure this out from here. I'm Bucky Barnes, if you ever need to use it to contact me."

Dick shook his hand with a smile in return, slightly bemused by the old fashioned mannerisms, but charmed by them all the same.

"Dick Grayson," he replied cheerfully "it's no problem, just let me know if you need anything else." He's happy to help out to make allies, but he's also happy to just make friends.
