Charity Ball
WHO: The well dressed and ready to party of Alpha Complex
WHAT: being well dressed and partying?
WHEN: daycycle 116, 1800-2200 hours
NOTES: There will be dedicated threads for the big pillars of the Ball, but feel free to make your own top level if you want to. You can use the account
sweetcharity to RP as NPCs at the ball. The Game NPC journal is also been made available by Sam. Information on how to access both can be found here.
ADDITIONAL NOTE: All raffles/auctions/sign-ups/whatever will end when the daycycle is over. All basket raffles, dance raffles, and the winner of the dance contest will be decided with RNG and I will comment with the winners.
NEW! The dance auctions seem to be wrapping up on their own as they reach a natural conclusion, so we'll just use that method. If you need an NPC, let me know and I will try to find you one.
-------------
The mingling portion of the ball lasts for about half an hour. The band playing light instrumental music that doesn't so much encourage dancing as it does give people ample opportunity to enjoy the buffet, browse the items available in the silent auction and the baskets for the raffle, and get a good eyeful of the various Specials in attendance, who they're with and what they're wearing. It'll be important later on.
On one side of the room, tucked out of the way but under a prominent sign, is a table where couples can register to be part of a dance contest with the promise of an exciting mystery prize for the winners.
Along a back wall, small round tables are lined up and showcasing items donated for a silent auction. There are a mix of actual physical items, as well as less tangible experiences, and bids are made on electronic input pads set up in front of each item, and using a citizen's ME card. Funds will be automatically deducted for each item won. Groups can bid on items together that the individuals might be otherwise unable to afford on their own. Physical items and vouchers for experiences will be delivered next daycycle.
In addition, there are a few baskets that will be raffled off during the evening. Winners need not be present to claim a raffle prize. Each basket has a theme, and tickets can be purchased at any time for five credits each using your ME card.
At 1830 hours, Stiles silently slips through the crowd, placing a lavish setee in front of the stage. Once Stiles is gone, Morgana makes her way over and sits on it. As soon as she's settled, the pre-recorded music dies down, then swells again in a new song. There is no formal announcement of the beginning of the entertainment, Jack Harkness simply crosses the dance floor, moving through people when he has to, and he and Morgana perform a choreographed waltz routine. Half way through the routine, a curtain on stage is pulled back to reveal a bandstand of actual live musicians, each wearing a suit jacket or dress of their clearance level. Yes, it's a bit of an eyesore, but they sound fantastic. Besides, people are meant to be watching Jack and Morgana.
Once the routine has got everyone's attention, Jack will activate a lapel mic and welcome the crowd to the evening's event. Someone will bring him the jacket for his suit, a suit so orange it's almost painful. He thanks Morgaga, kisses her hand, and then the band takes their cue and the music abruptly takes a turn for the upbeat. Jack encourages everyone onto the floor to learn a few line dances. Volunteers (including Stiles) will move through the crowd, encouraging people to join in as those in attendance are taught the hustle, the time warp, the YMCA, and yes, the unkillable chicken dance. Stiles will start a spirited conga line around the room while Jack sings Copacabana.
Around 1915, now that the crowd is good and energized, Jack will draw attention to the area available to sign up for the dance contest, and remind everyone that the silent auction and raffle tables will be open until the end of the evening.
He'll also be joined on the dance floor by Isabelle Lightwood, and the two will perform a tango routine in order to encourage bids for the auction prize of a private dance lesson with the pair of them. Anyone who doesn't want some one on one time with Izzy after seeing her in that dress is obviously insane. Jack will also follow this with the exciting news that the celebrity judge for the dance contest is none other than Alpha's beloved Teela O'Malley. All couples who have signed up will receive their numbers, and be asked to take the floor, giving spectators the chance to eat and to spend even more of their money on bids and raffle tickets. Couples will be eliminated by Teela, moving through the crowd, until only one remains. Their prize is an appearance on Teela's show, during Jack's opening section, on daycycle 118.
At about 2000 comes the part that quite a few specials won't enjoy. They haven't quite raised the funds he was hoping for yet, and Jack is auctioning off dances with Specials. As bidding progresses, he may attempt to persuade them to give even more of their time in an effort to drive the bidding higher. A few Specials have agreed to help out in this way ahead of time, and quite a few more will be talked into it on the spot. The rest of the evening will be peppered with Jack stopping the music to auction off a few more dances.
2100 brings a new idea from Steve that the specials aren't going to like any more than the dance auctions, the last dance raffle!. Which is really just an excuse to get the maximum number of Specials up on stage, through all of Jack and Steve's combined charisma and manipulation, for one last big fundraising push.
[[OOC: It should be noted that everyone who has helped Jack with the planning and execution of the Charity Ball, including anyone who took part in a choreographed dance routine, will not only get into the Ball for free, but will be able to come to the wrap party the next day after Teela's show, where even more real food and alcohol will be available. If you want your character to have a choreographed routine, or to otherwise contribute to the evening, you still have plenty of time to let me know.]

VERY SPECIAL LAST DANCE RAFFLE
If your character is going to be involved in this raffle, comment here with their journal. Remember, this is all for the last dance, so if you're planning on bidding, don't volunteer your character to be part of the raffle. This isn't like the previous auctions, taking place one at a time. They can't do both.
If you see a character you want to buy a raffle ticket for, reply to them. Remember, you can't buy multiple tickets for the same person's dance. You can, however, buy a ticket for more than one person. Don't forget to get in here with your NPCs!

DANCE CONTEST
no subject
Since dance is, basically, consistent physical activity to a set rhythm, of course it stands to reason that Clint and Nat are really good at it. Nat especially, having been put through ballet training from before she held a weapon and of course it continuing after, but Clint's no slouch himself since physical activity is something he's just naturally gifted at. Half the time undercover work involved dancing in some way so all S.H.I.E.L.D. field agents got a crash course, most of them doing very well - these two just took it farther than most.
And they're both very, very competitive.
They don't care about the prize, but it's a contest that they know they can do good in. Great, even. When it's announced, Clint makes his way around the floor in Nat's direction - even with red obviously being the most prominent color among the specials, it's hard to lose track of her in that dress - a smirk on his face that she can easily read. Once he gets within normal speaking distance of her, the smirk widens just a bit as he asks one question. "Which one?"

SPECIALS AUCTION
If I already spoke to you, Jack will be starting things off for your character. If you want for your character to just decide to volunteer in the moment, Jack will be around. Feel free to start a comment and I'll take it from there. If this is a situation where one person offers another without prior discussion or agreement, even better. All bets are off, people.
This auction will take place in the threaded comment under each opener in this thread. They will close Sunday evening, so that the winners have the second week of this daycycle to thread out their dances with their special Special. Keep in mind, you are bidding against NPCs in this, as well. Speaking of. Anyone interested in playing at some giddy NPCs if they win anyone? :D
Steve Rogers
He sweeps a hand back to gesture at Steve, urging him to step further into the spotlight. "I think you're all familiar with my friend here, yes?" There's a titter of laughter, and a whole lot of cheering. "That's right. Steven Rogers, Alpha's twenty seventh most eligible bachelor. Let's hear it for him!" This time, the applause is much more boisterous. "Now I'm not sure if you're aware, but Steve is a very generous person. When he heard about this event, he wanted to know what he could do to help. When he heard that we hadn't quite met our fundraising goal, he asked me again if there was anything he could do to help. And I said... anything?" Jack flashes the crowd a conspiratorial grin, and gets a little laugh. "Well, we certainly can't put that in a raffle basket, but I think I can offer you something almost as tempting. We are offering you all a chance to win a dance with this gorgeous specimen right here. That's right, we are auctioning off one dance with our delicious Mister Rogers. Who will start the bidding at fifty credits?"
Hands instantly shoot into the air, and Jack laughs. "I saw it here first. Fifty credits to the woman up front. Will anyone take us to seventy five? Come on, Steve, why don't you give us a little turn? Show the folks what they're getting."

Prim Dancing
She's not sure ifs he's going to succeed, but she's trying either way.
The teenager is grateful to Cisco for helping her out, and she's all too aware that she owes him something in return for his kindness. He told her not to trust anybody, and yet...she'd be lying if she said that she didn't trust him and her sister implicitly. She's not sure who else to trust just yet, but she's not here to worry about that; Prim wanted to come to the ball to have fun. She feels prettier than she's ever felt before, truth be told, in her red dress, a few strays falling down from her hair in places...along with a smile on her face that hasn't managed to slip the entire evening. She's eaten, she's mingled, and now she's dancing with whoever agrees, unable to help the energy that she's got at the moment. She's alive again, and this is fun....even if she feels bad that her sister hasn't quite looked like she's had as much fun this evening.
Prim isn't sure who she's dancing with at the moment, but she's been out there through all of the fun dances that Jack lead them through, switching from partner to partner. She wishes it were this easy for her sister. Though, the handsy RED level at one point, she could have done without.... Aside from that, the evening's been great all things considered.
combating the Red invasion
When they're far away enough that said citizen won't be able to hear them, Jack leans close. "You looked a little uncomfortable there. If it was some kind of sexy stranger role playing game you two were enjoying, I apologize and I'll return you to him immediately."

Steve Rogers | OTA
If the Charity Ball had been a few days ago, Steve would probably be here feeling like everyone else — excited or happy or relaxed. But no, it's happening today, on 116, when Steve is still trying to process too many things from yesterday, including the fact that Peggy had been arrested for treason, and for a second time, even if Steve doesn’t remember the first. The Computer
in her wisdomhad wiped that one from his mind. But Steve's always known how to keep it together when duty called. He’d said yes to the dance auction ahead of time, and the Very Special Forces are here to act as security. So yeah, you could say that Steve came beause it was his job, and because he intends to follow through on his promises.
During the first thirty minutes, there’s someone specific he wants to speak to about Peggy’s defense, so he spends a good amount of time searching for him. But after that, maybe it’s because of the conversation he has, or maybe because Steve’s calmed himself down, the soldier looks a little more at ease. Like if you just gave him a little push, he might actually be able to enjoy himself.
For the rest of the night, he and Bucky work in shifts, especially if one of them needs to go on stage. Sometimes Steve's clearly on the lookout for trouble, while other times he’s allowing himself to take a break. He might even dance, if you ask.

Threat Assessment is practically her middle name, and whether she wants to admit it or not, wearing a nice dress with her makeup done and her hair up has her feeling more like herself than she has in weeks. It's like Moscow all over again. Or Istanbul, or Paris, or - well. The point has been made.
She's wandering through the crowd before she finally sees him, and Natasha can't help but crack a small smile when she notices Steve Rogers standing in that 'relaxed-not-so-relaxed' way that he does. If anybody deserves to at least try and enjoy himself, it's Steve. Especially after what happened. Especially after Peggy.
She steps up from behind him and she places her fingertips on the back of his shoulder, dragging them across his back to his other shoulder as she circles around him to stop in front of him with a smile. "Well well, someone cleans up nicely. And here I thought you didn't know how to wear anything more complicated than a button down."

Jack Harkness | OTA
When the dance floor looks a little anemic, he makes the rounds to try and entice wallflowers out onto the floor, either by pairing them off, or asking for a dance himself. Gender doesn't bother him, and he'll lead or follow. He just wants you to have a good time. Really. Just look at that smile.
A few times during the evening, he adds items to the silent auction. At one point, he's even helping out the overburdened wait staff by carrying around a tray of champagne while they track down a missing employee.
He may not be spending a ton of time among the guests, but he gets everywhere in that purposeful way of his. Besides, he's damn near impossible to miss in his loud orange suit. If you have a problem, you can tell him about it. Question? He'll do his best to answer it. Just want a little more excitement in your evening? There are any number of-- all right, so there aren't really many dark corners, but when has the lack of seclusion ever stopped Jack?

Clearly, she will have to keep a close eye on him. Something that should be more troubling than it is, but well- the man is easy on the eyes. It's part of the reason why she's made him an assistant. That and she needed the rating boost his sudden popularity ensured. She'll beat Alpha's Most Wanted numbers if it's the last thing she does.
They've discussed the dance they'll be doing and even practiced it earlier, but she still manages to look the appropriate amount of surprised when the music starts playing and he calls her on stage, giving the audience a surprised look of who, me? before moving through the crowd to the stage.

Barry Allen | OTA
What had followed had been some last minute shopping - thank God Free Enterprise was on hand to provide a suit for a small fortune - and an attempt at distracting one of his best friends from something he knew all too well was the worst uncertainty in Alpha. He still felt the loss of Ray and felt the full weight of not being there to help him when he'd been taken. It was different with Oliver, somehow. If anyone could figure out a way to get out of this, it was Oliver. At least that's what he'd kept telling himself and Felicity by extension.
Was it the best time to go to a charity ball? Probably not. Should they have been possibly trying to work out another way to break into the location where treasonous citizens were held? Yes. Definitely. Except that between the three of them, they'd already mapped out every possibility and none of them had been high enough clearance to get anywhere with it. Their hands were tied and as much as Barry hated that, he also knew that their best chance at getting more information was being at this very public event, where they might have the opportunity to mingle with new clearance levels and even possibly use their strange fame to their advantage.
He is polite to anyone who asks him for a dance, making conversation and genty inquiring about people's jobs and positions. For those NPCs that get a little handsy, he grins and is quick to redirect any wandering hands to more acceptable places. He isn't the best dancer, but he's not the worst and he doesn't hesitate in attempting to distract Felicity or any other Special by any means necessary, even if it means sacrificing his own dignity slightly, with a dance or three.
Otherwise, Barry can be found sipping champagne and discovering that, okay, yes, he can get a little tipsy here and people watching while also trying to figure out how to talk to higher clearance levels. He might awkwardly interject himself into conversations in an attempt to get more information. He can also be spotted glaring often at the night's Entertainment Director and watching him with a very obvious amount of distrust.
no subject
Not all of the experiences had been bad, though. Mingling isn't really her thing, but she's enjoying herself. Plus, it's definitely a plus to be wearing something other than a jumpsuit. Dancing is also helping with that and, in so many ways, it really feels like she's at prom. All she's missing is Scott and Isaac but, whenever that thought crosses her mind, she's quick to bury it down. She's an Argent, after all; she's a pro at compartmentalizing things as needed.
And yes, the alcohol is helping. Not that she's going overboard, but she's enjoying the free access to it despite the fact that she's technically underage. Do those things apply when living and working in some underground city ruled by a Computer, though? She sure as hell doesn't think so.
It's while she's at the bar, picking up a refill of her own champagne, that she sees the guy that is glaring at the Entertainment Director. Which, of course, she doesn't understand why, but it prompts her to pick up another flute of champagne and approaches him with it. "Here," she says as she offers it to him, a small smile crossing her lips, "you look like you need it."

Morgana | OTA
But Jack was charming, and in a moment of calm she had remembered something she should have long before this point: Root had been playing good, and would've almost certainly have gone. Morgana could never make friends and move up the ranks if she kept hiding in the shadows. She would just have to suck it up and channel her anger and hurt somewhere else.
So Morgana agreed to Jack's little proposal of them dancing together, she got Izzys help to work out which of a veritable pile of orange dresses would suit her, eventually settling on a low cut number with the lightest skirts she had felt in her life. Every turn she made they fanned out around her, drawing attention down the entire length of her body.
She had also had to learn how to walk, and then dance in some weird shoes that were called "high heels" which had certainly caused Izzy some entertainment, and surely Jack as well. At least she could stab someone with them if something went wrong here, like it often did.
Tonight life felt easy, for once. She had gotten herself ready, hair pulled up into carefully crafted braids with only a curl or two escaping, she had pulled on her dress, a little bit nervous when she regarded just how exposed it left her but thrilled just the same, slipped on her shoes and she had taken the walk to the ball by herself.
It was like nothing she had ever seen. Even being part of the night's entertainment hadn't prepared Morgana to see just how crowded the place was, the lights, the colours, the clothes that in Camelot she wasn't even sure any seamstress would know how to sew. And sure, some of them had things in odd places, and they didn't always suit the people wearing them but they were beautiful nonetheless.
And the suits. Izzy had mentioned them, but Morgana hadn't given it much thought after that, because surely there couldn't be too much variety to wonder about... but she had been so wrong.
Luckily she didn't have time to stare at people like a child from the country who had never seen city folk for too long, soon she was dancing with Jack, ignoring the surge of self-consciousness that came from the realisation of how many people were looking at her with that spotlight right on the two of them. She focused on Jack, and the music she now knew by heart as they twirled and moved together. They had practised enough that it felt perfectly natural, and the smile on her lips was genuine as they parted, and she almost laughed when he kissed her hand, cheeks rosy from the dance as much as from Jack's thanks.
The dances that came after theirs weren't quite so, uh, elegant, but Morgana didn't entirely stand them out, at least not after she went and found the wine and had a glass and a half.
To see what Jack and Izzy had chosen for a dance, that left her honestly with her mouth agape. Not because it was scandalous (okay, it was, a little) but because the ease and speed at which they moved, there was a grace to it that left her blinking and clapping when they were done.
After that she spends her time moving around the floor, occasionally with some wine, or maybe something sweet as she attempted to find her friends, or someone to dance with. She didn't get all dressed up to stand in the shadows, after all.

When he spots Morgana, he doesn't waste any time in approaching her. Coming up from behind her, he places a hand on the small of her back and smiles with that Stark charm of his. Even if he had started the night looking pretty damn presentable with his suit, by now the tie is loose around his neck, his hair tousled slightly, but Tony's confidence and the way he carries himself makes it almost look as if he's making a fashion statement with it all.
"Hey. You look stunning."

Emma| OTA
Emma was out of her element, though, and she probably looked like it. It wasn't that she didn't like dressing up or dancing, but she never had anyone that wanted her like that. By the time she could have it, when she remembered, she was too jaded by what life through at her to try.
Being here was different, though, here she had a reason to mingle, she just didn't know if anyone would want to mingle with her, but those were her issues and not anyone else's. She is available for dancing and when not dancing, she can be found at the food table or the bar.
