Morning

There are things she doesn't want to remember. There are so many things that Katniss doesn't want to remember. But like it or not, she remembers that false happiness of the past few days. She remembers how easily smiles came and how conversation seemed to come far too easy. Yesterday and the day before, Katniss hadn't minded her positive attitude and friendly demeanor at all. Now, she just wants to keep forgetting everything.

It's not all that easy though. Some things are seared in her memory. And though she's doing her best to avoid the cafeteria and the food it offers, thirst eventually gets the better of her. So by lunch, she cautiously slips into the cafeteria. The water she gets tastes plane enough. If it winds up being her drink that had been spiked, she'll find out soon enough.

She doesn't say anything to Zatanna as she sits down at the table across from her. Although Katniss would prefer to sit alone, if she does that there's a chance someone she knows might sit across from her. This has to be the safest way to avoid any awkward conversations.

The girl who sits across from her is vaguely familiar in that way that she knows she's a Special, but she doesn't know who she is. A couple of days ago, Zee would be right there with her, scowling and settling in silence because it's better than having to talk, but today she feels fantastic.

"Hi there!" she greets the other girl as she sits and Zatanna offers her a smile. "I'm Zatanna. You can call me Zee, if you like; most of my friends do. It's just easier. What's your name?" she asks.

Her lunch is momentarily abandoned in favor of giving this girl her undivided attention because it would be rude not to, wouldn't it? When she's trying to strike up a conversation? Poor Katniss has picked the wrong day to sit with Zatanna Zatara if she had been looking for a quiet lunch with no conversation.

It's probably a stupid idea, being here with food so near. Even if it's just soylent, and probably the most unappetizing thing Katniss has ever experienced, there's still a temptation to fill her stomach until the hunger pains go away. That would be easy. So easy. What's harder is sticking to water and just water. Somehow, she's managed so far and Katniss hasn't felt any strange effects from the drink.

One thing her decision has done is made her more irritable than normal. Although it's Katniss that chose to sit across from Zatanna, the second the girl starts to babble, she scowls. She scowls because she had been stupidly optimistic that this girl would be as quiet as she is and allow for a lunch without any awkward questions or conversation. She scowls because she's been scowling at strangers all day.

But she does answer. Quietly and a little reluctantly after a long drink from her glass. "Katniss."

While the glowering from across the table doesn't go unnoticed, in her drugged state, it doesn't actually deter Zatanna from continuing to try to interact with the girl. In fact, it gives way to something a little bit more sympathetic and engaging than the previous ball of sunshine she'd been when she'd greeted her.

"It's nice to meet you Katniss," she says. "...are you all right? What's wrong? Do you want to talk about it? I'm a great listener!" she offers and, all right, there's a bit of excitability there admittedly. There wouldn't be if she was herself, but right now she isn't. She'll be mortified later at the insensitivity her normal self would've known would likely be perceived from her brand or response to a bad mood coming off someone else.

Deja vu is not something that Katniss has experienced before. But this is something that feels eerily similar to a situation she had been in a couple days prior. Except then, she had been the one chatting cheerfully while a boy had sat across the table from her scowling. It's eerily familiar but Katniss doesn't know Zatanna well enough to understand where these similarities stem from.

Katniss could easily sit there quietly. Or she could get up and find a new place to sit as she slowly sips at her water. She doesn't do either, though she does scowl a little. Her stomach rumbles and words come easily after: "I'm hungry."

The other girl's response, when it comes, isn't exactly what Zatanna is expecting, but her expression falls with sympathy and she pushes her tray toward the other girl. "You should eat," she says, nodding. "We can share. I don't mind!"

Zatanna has never actually gone hungry. She's had a good life, for the most part, and she's never wanted for necessities, like food. So the teenager can't even begin to imagine what it must feel like to legitimately have no access to food and she doesn't really know why Katniss wouldn't just get some, if she's hungry, but she's more than willing to share if that's what it takes.

It's tempting. It's so, so tempting to take Zatanna on her offer and share the girl's meal with her. Her stomach certain thinks that's what she ought to do right now. Eat the soylent, no matter how awful it tastes. Get something in her stomach aside from water. The first day she had been drugged, she hadn't encountered anyone else who had been affected. She couldn't say the same about the second day, however, and that's what makes her nervous.

"I don't want to," she says instead of the more polite 'thanks but no thanks.' "I- I don't trust the food."
satnalahcsauoyekil: (sad zee)

[personal profile] satnalahcsauoyekil 2016-11-08 05:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Initially, Katniss's response throws Zatanna off a little bit. She just said she was hungry and now she's saying that she doesn't want to share, nor does she have her own food. That's contradictory and confusing, but then the other girl speaks again to clarify and Zee frowns a little with sympathy.

"Why not?" she asks, genuinely curious. She can't imagine why Katniss wouldn't trust the food, because it's just food, isn't it? It hasn't occurred to her that the food could very well be half the reason she feels so different today.
stillplaying: ([anger] trust no one)

[personal profile] stillplaying 2016-11-10 04:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Everything is suspicious to Katniss today. The only reason that she had caved to a glass of water was because her thirst had gotten the better of her. But everything else she had consumed the previous few days aren't an option right now. That means coffee, soylent, bubbly drinks available only at nightclubs... She won't touch any of them.

Eventually, the need for food will overtake her stubbornness. Eventually she will eat something. But Katniss is hoping that by then, the Computer or whoever it is drugging her will get the hint and stop.

"Because the last time I ate, I wasn't myself. I-" Kissed boys she shouldn't kissed. Sung happily. Danced. "I wasn't me."
satnalahcsauoyekil: (empathetic)

[personal profile] satnalahcsauoyekil 2016-11-10 09:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Still, Zatanna looks a bit confused. What does food have to do with not being one's self?

"What do you mean?" she asks, looking concerned. She leans forward suddenly, oblivious to the irony of her following question as her eyes widen slightly. "You mean you think that your food was drugged? I've heard they do that sometimes!" she gasps.

She leans back again and pushes her tray closer still to Katniss. "Mine isn't, if you want some. You should eat something..." she says sympathetically.
stillplaying: ([neutral] just that stubborn)

[personal profile] stillplaying 2016-11-16 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Katniss had heard the rumors, too. People are careful talking here but some people are more careful than others. Don't comply and drugs will be slipped into your food. That's what had happened, isn't it? Something had been slipped into her food and hearing Zatanna say similar just confirms that.

She shakes her head again and reaches for her water. The water remains safe. She's been slowly sipping at it for a while now and hasn't felt any different. Her suspicions remain at the forefront of her thoughts; that's something that hadn't happened yesterday. "I don't want to take any chances."
satnalahcsauoyekil: (empathetic)

[personal profile] satnalahcsauoyekil 2016-11-16 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Another frown crosses the teenager's face. If Katniss doesn't want to share and she's not even willing to try, then there's not a whole lot that Zatanna can do. She hates feeling helpless but right now, she very much is. A soft sigh of defeat escapes her. Pushing could border on bullying when she doesn't mean to come across that way, so Zatanna decides to let it go.

"Okay, well if you change your mind..." she offers quietly, pulling her tray back toward herself. She hasn't got a lot more time left on lunch before she needs to get back so she might as well get back to eating, especially if Katniss isn't going to take any.
stillplaying: ([happy] thank you)

[personal profile] stillplaying 2016-11-17 02:58 am (UTC)(link)
It's okay. Katniss doesn't expect Zatanna to do all that much anyway. Mostly she had taken a seat across from the other girl to avoid talking to people she had encountered yesterday. And with that, she has been helpful. Not that Katniss will ever admit this part aloud.

"Thanks," she says, actually meaning it. The offer stands; Katniss recognizes that even as Zatanna pulls back her tray. And she appreciates it, too.
