Daycycle 103 [ August 14 - August 20 ]
daycycle 103
[Aug 14 - Aug 20]
Early Morning [0800 - 0900] — All Troubleshooters Report for Duty
Samantha "Root" Groves and Cisco Ramon, have been selected for today’s mission. Details are below:
"Confirm circuit breakers are functioning properly by creating short circuits to test them."
Please debrief the computer on the status of your mission by the end of the Daycycle here.
Morning & Afternoon [0900 - 1600] — Service Firm Positions
All Troubleshooters not assigned a mission should report to their Service Firm for their daily duties, unless specifically assigned a different shift.
Evening [1600 - 2200] — Citizen Improvement
All Alpha citizens are encouraged to better themselves through Alpha’s wide variety of educational, entertainment and cultural opportunities offered each evening. Attending these sanctioned events are not mandatory, but is highly encouraged by The Computer. Citizens choosing not to take advantage of these opportunities, have a growing number of other options available to them in how to spend their hard earned credits and free time.
Tonight’s event will be at 1900 in the Commissary and will be hosted by the Amateaur Dramatics Group. You're invited to come see the one woman show that Mind Control called too "boring" to put on early morning television.
Specials Event - All Specials with knowledge of Specials HQ have been invited to a surprise party to celebrate wanted fugitive, Dick Grayson's, seventeenth birthday.
Alpha Curfew Restrictions
All Alpha citizens should be in their quarters within the Wagon Wheel by 2200, unless they’ve been given permission from a GREEN or higher clearance level citizen. Sleeping Aid gas is dispelled each night in the Wagon Wheel at 2200 to assist citizens in getting a productive sleeping period.
Confession Booths
There are hundreds of confession booths available around Alpha Complex if a citizen would like to communicate directly with the computer. Please use these confession booths to report mission statuses, report treason or terrorist acts, unregistered mutants, confess your trespasses against Alpha Complex, request propaganda or speak with Your Friend, The Computer, at any time.
Re: Specials Event!
He spent most of the morning and early afternoon trying to distract himself, working out or prowling the corridors for something to do. Occasionally, he popped into the special HQ to see if anyone was around, but every time he dropped by he found it empty. He wasn't completely surprised, there was always something going on and not everybody could sneak away from their day jobs to hang out there, they probably all just had things to do, it had been pretty quiet the day before as well...
As the day wore on, he began to feel more and more lonely, he tried to convince himself that it was okay, that it was just another day and maybe it wasn't even his birthday anyway, maybe he'd counted wrong, and what was so special about a birthday there wasn't anything different about it, why should he expect anything?
He wasn't very convincing.
He found his steps takng him back to the special HQ, hoping that there was somebody there now, because keeping his own mind off the whole thing was just not working, and if he didn't find someone soon he was going to go crazy.
Specials Event | Lydia & Dick
If Dick didn't want a party, the last person he should've mentioned his birthday to was Lydia, so she really hoped, as the door opened, that he wouldn't be upset with her for it. Dick was greeted to a chorus of Surprise! albeit one that was kept at a manageable volume so that it wouldn't echo down the corridor and call attention to their location. Lydia gave him sort of a sheepish little smile before stepping forward and giving him a hug.
"Happy birthday. Don't be mad, okay?" she whispered in his ear, "parties are kind of my thing and, really, you brought this upon yourself." She let go of him and stepped back with a playful little smirk before nodding for him to follow her. "Come on, there's food food to be had!"
Re: Specials Event | Lydia & Dick
He accepted the hug when Lydia stepped forward, still a little dazed, but appreciative of her clarification that yes, this was a party, a birthday party, and it was for him.
"I..this is all... I mean... wow, Lydia, just, wow, colour me not whelmed at all. Distinctly overwhelmed. This is - food?" he followed her over to the table and his breath caught in his throat. He swallowed thickly and he was definitely not blinking back tears, nope.
"You got pizza?"
Specials Event | Lydia & Dick
Giving him a little smile, Lydia nodded, leading him up to the lab counter where the food was laid out, and she gave a little wave of her hand in a vague gesture toward the spread. "Real food," she promised. "And I made pizza, so...it might not be amazing or anything. It's been a long time since I made a pizza from scratch like that. But still, totally edible and not the garbage we were stuck eating in RED," she added.
She was glad that he didn't appear to be upset about it, though, at least. Even if he did look very much taken aback by the whole thing. "Oh! I have something for you, but I gotta wait another...hour or so? So, remind me so that I don't forget to give it to you, okay?" Some part of her was positive that she wouldn't forget anyway, but a little insurance policy didn't hurt when she was sort of wrapped up in the excitement of a party, even if it wasn't a great one.
Re: Specials Event | Lydia & Dick
"And you got me a present? You really didn't have to do all this, Lydia, this is amazing, really. You've made my day. There's cake too!? This is the best!"
Specials Event | Lydia & Dick
"I gave it a whirl, anyway," she said, "but you can thank Steve and Morgana for the ingredients for it, and Morgana for nabbing the fruits and vegetables for the trays. ...and I can't even take credit for the cake, as much as I would like to. That was all Steve."
It was reassuring, though, that he appeared to be moving past emotional and into excitement. That meant, to Lydia, that she'd done well. "Yeah, well...sort of, I sort of made you a present? But yeah, we'll get to that. Go eat!" she chirped, giving him a gentle little push toward the table. "You first. The rest of us after. It's your day, after all."
Re: Specials Event | Lydia & Dick
"I can't believe how many people you got involved in this! This is amazing of everybody!" he grinned, half bouncing on his heels - he was tempted to do a backflip he was so excited. He knew he had Lydia to thank primarily, since she was the only person who'd known it was his birthday, but he couldn't believe that multiple people had gone to this effort for him.
"Okay, okay!" he was practically skipping over to the table and reached for the knife to cut himself a slice of pizza, mouth watering just at the thought of it. Real food, real, homemade pizza and he couldn't wait to share it with all of them. Even with everybody in their (mostly) matching outfits and the utilitarian surroundings, it almost felt like a real party, like they could pretend they were home. Sort of. With a weird and different group of friends, but still, it was almost normality.
"Oh my god this is beautiful," he half-groaned, words muffled horribly by the mouthful of pizza. He swallowed it quickly and gave Lydia a thumbs up "It tastes great. You should have some! Everybody should have some!"
Specials Event | Lydia & Dick
With his proclamation that they should all have at, Lydia went ahead and took a slice, grabbing a few veggies and fruits off the tray as well and the lot of them were largely quiet while they enjoyed real food. Lydia got to have real food once a week, but some of the others didn't get to have it at all...like Dick. She couldn't really blame anyone for stuffing their faces and leaving it at that for a bit.
A short while later, Lydia pulled Dick aside again. "Okay, so Barry helped with this, so it's really from both of us," she prefaced, taking his wrist to draw him nearer to where she and Barry had stowed the bin, "and it's probably going to need to set a little longer, but will definitely be ready by tonight when you need it," she added before crouching down and pulling the bin out. She pushed it toward Dick and smiled. "I guess you're getting yours first, after all," she finished with a little smirk, because she figured if she didn't give him a hint, it might still kind of just look like a blob of foam to him which, you know, wouldn't be all that great a gift.
Re: Specials Event | Lydia & Dick
Even though he thought she'd already done more than enough to make this the best birthday possible, he was excited when she pulled him aside for what he assumed to be his present. He watched, mystified, as she pulled the bin out, her initial explanation not making a great deal of sense - until he looked inside and her final words made it click.
"You made me a pillow!? Oh man this is the best!" He'd made a nice enough little nest for himself, tucked away where nobody could find him, but it still only as luxurious as a scavenged hidey hole really could be, and this would just make it that little bit more comfortable, make it feel the tiniest bit more like home.
Unable to resist, he threw his arms around her, hugging her tightly. "Thank you!"
Specials Event | Lydia & Dick
"Listen, I don't want to keep you, there's lots of people here. Leave this in the bin and I'll tuck it back out of the way and then before you're ready to go to bed tonight, take it out. It'll be ready by then. It might not be super firm until tomorrow night, but it'll still work. It sucks that you're stuck here on your birthday so I just...you know. Wanted to make it a little less sucky."

Specials Event | Lydia & Dick
Specials Event! | Open (but also for Dick)
When he walks into headquarters, he's wearing the red tinted glasses that he always wears and he's got his white cane with him. He doesn't have to pretend to need the cane here; he actually does need it and the sunglasses are more for everyone else's comfort. His eyes don't focus on anything and people often find it disconcerting.
Once at the party, he'll find Dick first in order to tell him happy birthday. From there, he'll mingle, talking to the people he knows and introducing himself to the ones that he doesn't. He'll also make certain to find Lydia. This is one place they don't have to worry about getting in trouble for showing mutual affection.

She hangs back to let him wish Dick a happy birthday and make his rounds, meeting new people and checking in with others and once she can't stand the wait anymore, Lydia makes her way to him, the same fond smile on her face that seems to be ever-present when Matt's around, these days.
"Hey handsome," she greets with a smile and a chaste kiss. "I was wondering if you were going to be able to make it down or if you'd be busy with a trial or something," she admits before adding, "I'm glad you could come."
no subject
Even if he can't see that smile, he's glad that she's wearing it. He's glad that he's responsible for that smile.
He knows that she's there a split second before she speaks. He smells her, hears her. Of course, the kiss and her voice confirms it for him. He returns the kiss quickly. "I wouldn't miss it. I've been looking forward to this, to seeing you." In this room where no one cares that they're from two different levels here, where they aren't risking everything by being happy.
no subject
Lydia's fingers lace through Matt's and she gives his hand a little squeeze. "Come try the pizza I made. Because I told you I'm a good cook, but now I can actually prove it, much thanks to Morgana and Steve for the supplies," she tells him proudly as she starts to lead him toward the lab table they've cleared off to put out the food. "There's a fruit and veggie tray, too, and they're real food, not...that garbage in the Commissary. And Steve got cake for Dick. I think there might be a few slices left...do you want anything?"
no subject
He does wear the glasses for everyone else as his eyes don't react to light and he doesn't mind if Lydia takes the glasses off. They're one of the first things that come off when he's alone. They aren't uncomfortable, just unnecessary. After a moment, he does go ahead and take them off, slipping them into a pocket. He'll put them back on if someone else comes into their conversation.
"Pizza? You told me you were a good cook, but you didn't tell me you were magic," he teases her as she leads him over toward the lab table. His stomach rumbles a little at the mention of real food. Yeah, he gets fresh food fairly often, but that doesn't stop him from appreciating it. In all honesty, he probably won't eat much of the fruit and veggie tray. Instead, he'll save it for those that don't get real food so often. "Pizza definitely and a small slice of cake as well. Thank you." His gratitude is sincere. Without his senses, he could easily end up putting his hands in the cake or the pizza or make a fool out of himself some other way. He's glad to have Lydia help him.
no subject
Maybe it doesn't mean any of those things, but that's what Lydia sees in the simple gesture of Matt removing his glasses in the middle of a crowded room and it earns him a soft, lingering kiss.
"Oh, did I forget to mention that part?" she jokes back. She nods at his food order and casually goes about getting a little plate together for him with his requests. If the domesticity implied in the way that she doesn't ask whether he'd like her to and he doesn't have to tell her before she just does it actually occurred to Lydia, she'd probably feel a little stupid about reading so much into simple things in the past several minutes alone.
She gives him a little kiss on the cheek as she puts the plate in his hands. "You're welcome, baby," she says quietly and her face warms in a way she's glad he can't see when she registers the fact that she's just used that sort of pet name for the first time with him. Sure, she calls him handsome a lot, but he is. This feels a little different. She's worrying at her bottom lip with her teeth as she looks back at him, wondering whether he noticed the slip of her tongue and how he feels about it.
no subject
Well, she essentially is. He's going to focus on this conversation with her, on this time spent with her. He's got no intention of being rude, but he is taking the glasses off for her because he knows that she prefers it. Honestly, he's just thankful that she's not 'creeped' out by it. Of course, he probably wouldn't be dating her if she were.
She's not wrong; the kiss is just icing. He hums contentedly into the kiss, knowing that it probably should break because they're in front of people, but not wanting it to.
"You did and that's really the sort of thing that ought to be disclosed at the beginning of the relationship. I would have taken advantage of this pizza magic much, much sooner had I know." He smirks when he says it, standing back a little as he listens to her make a plate for him. He likes that she doesn't ask simply because it makes his blindness less awkward and he's only about half coping with not having his skills anyway. He's destroyed his room the other night simply because he'd stubbed his toe on a chair. It's been a couple of decades since he'd done that.
On the contrary, the slip makes him grin a bit. He does wish he could still tell when she gets embarrassed because he'd be able to assure her that there's no reason to be embarrassed. However, there's that old, tired inner monologue about not having his senses. It does feel different having her call him 'baby', more like a couple and less like flirting. he manages to reach out and grab one of her hands, brushing a kiss against the knuckles. Of course, now he's trying to decide which sort of pet name feels natural to use for her. He's never really been in a relationship where pet names were a thing. Electra would have strung him up for calling her baby, darling, sweetheart or any other pet name. Instead he opts to move on, hoping the way he kissed her hand would reassure her that he likes the pet name and he'll ponder what to call her later. "Is an empty seat somewhere or should we just commandeer one end of the table?"
no subject
It's a huge relief, actually, when Matt takes her hand and kisses her knuckles. She could be wrong, but she's pretty sure it's his subtle way of telling her that he heard it and he's fine with it which is a weight off her chest. The fact that he doesn't mind the pet name would suggest to Lydia that they're actually a couple and it isn't one-sided; they're not just dancing around their attraction to each other and she's not the only one emotionally invested here. Finishing up his plate, she guides it into his hands and looks around the room.
"Uhhh..." she stalls. Not really. The sofa and chairs are taken, and some people are standing or sitting on the floor. "We can take up an end of the table, hold on, I'll clear us a spot." With that, she moves away from him, a little touch to the side of his face to let him know she's going, and she starts pushing the papers and scattering of items out of the way before heading back to him with another little touch, this one to his arm. "I'm just gonna grab a plate for myself really fast," she warns him of the delay and she skips the pizza because she's already had a slice, but grabs a plateful of veggies and fruit before taking his arm with her free hand and guiding him to the other end of the table where they can sit on the rickety lab stools, or stand, and enjoy their meals without getting in anyone else's way. "You'll have to let me know if it's as good as it sounds," she says with a little smile, meaning the pizza.

Re: Specials Event! | Open (but also for Dick)
"Thanks! And thanks so much for coming to celebrate, man, it means a lot."
no subject
"You're welcome. I hope it's been a good day so far?" Because he knows Dick is still young and everyone deserves to have things like this. There are a good number of people here that care about Dick. It's good that he realizes that and that they've all got the chance to show that.
no subject
Dick is nice enough that he wouldn't resent anybody who was just here because they needed a party, and while he is, at the back of his mind, aware that it's probably the reason at least some of them are there, he's happy to ignore that part and focus on the idea that everybody's here to celebrate him, it's nice to be a little selfish from time to time, and it is his birthday after all.
"It's been a brilliant day, best day I've had here so far." it wasn't strictly true, the majority of the day itself had been quite melancholy, but the significant upturn in mood that the party had caused was enough for him to give the day as a whole a much better rating.
no subject
He smiles when Dick says it's been a good day. "You deserve it. I'm glad it's been good." Hey, sometimes that's what it takes: selective memory, or something like that. "We should start celebrating more. I think it's good for people."
no subject
"You're right," Dick agrees with an enthusiastic nod "Maybe we should start figuring out people's birthdays, or anniversaries or... anything, really. Maybe we should just have parties to celebrate a Tuesday. Even though Tuesdays aren't really a thing here... does anybody else think that's a bit weird?" he'd never thought about how much days of the week and months were a part of life until they were gone and it just felt a little strange, it didn't have that much of an impact per say, but it was still sort of jarring.
"Sorry, off topic, yes people should celebrate more, boost morale and all that."
no subject
He pauses, looking around the room. "Except this. It feels a little like a Friday. Thank you for that."
no subject
"I know what you mean," he nods "Although ever since I went off grid it all feels a little bit like one of those Sundays when you have nothing to do but you've got school the next day." he isn't sure if the sentiment makes any sense, but it's the best way he can describe how it feels.
"I don't know if you should be thanking me, it's really Lydia who's responsible for that Friday feeling," he smiles.
