Derek is taking a break from the liquor and food before he gets himself sick. Having been deprived of the latter for so long and combining his curiosity about the former while he can actually be affected by it, he's liable to go overboard and he needs to keep his wits about himself at least a little because he promised Buffy he wouldn't let her leave with anyone tonight. If he's out of it because he overindulged, he can't be a good friend and Derek's not willing to compromise that.

So at the moment, he's just sort of hanging out on the fringe, people watching. Largely, Buffy-watching just in case because it's such a simple promise that he made; breaking it would make him a pretty shitty friend. He's not really expecting to be approached because he's mostly been pretty anti-social. Derek is buzzed, that's for certain, but most people who've met him know what he's like on a normal day and probably can't be bothered to see if anything has changed just because he's eating real food while wearing a monkey suit.

It takes him a second to place the voice, because he hasn't seen her in a few days, but once it clicks, as she's moving around to face him, Derek laughs, shaking his head. "That sounds like a them problem and not so much a me problem," he jokes back. He smiles a little as she adjusts his clothes and appraises him before deciding to go with a playful compliment.

He lifts his half-empty glass in response. "It's amazing how much alcohol that actually has an effect changes," he corrects her. "Hey stranger. And look who's talking, those girls aren't tripping on their heels; they're tripping on all the dropped jaws all over the floor."
