Derek realizes he's clearly said something offensive to her, but he can't for the life of him figure out what that thing is. It doesn't surprise him, though, is the saddest part. He doesn't know the Specials that were in the blast and he definitely doesn't know any of the other Alphas that were there. Derek is in at this ball as a favor to a friend and he's offered himself up for auction in exchange for real food. That's it.
"I don't give a shit about them, Katniss," he says in a low voice meant especially for her, but he does sound hurt and frustrated that, after everything, she could think that she'd been included in that. "I care about you. You're my friend. I don't have a whole lot of those."
