After the train ride back, Derek catches a familiar scent in the elevator and he can't help it that he notices her out of the corner of his eye in the common area as he and Stiles step out of the elevator. They go their separate ways because he says he's just going to wind down and process by himself for a few minutes before he goes back into the room he's sharing with two essential strangers. They say good night and Derek waits a moment, hesitating in the hall, before he moves into the common area where he's seen Felicity all alone. The smell of upset in the air is nearly choking him.
"Hey..." he says quietly, moving into the room but keeping a short distance between them in case she decides she'd rather tell him to fuck off than allow him to sit down and see why she smells so sad. "...you okay?"
He can't just leave unless she tells him to; he can't just let her sit there alone and feeling like no one gives a shit when Derek does. Mostly because it's Hot Coffee Girl — and yeah, he intends the double entendre there — but also because he's not completely heartless. Derek's been through a lot and, in general, his experiences with humans have left a pretty sour taste in his mouth, but he can't in good conscience not check in to make sure she's at least acknowledged when she's feeling like that.
