"Yeah," the word drops, heavy like a sandbag. The silence feels heavy too, as it fills the room.

"You really don't remember then." There isn't any judgment in his voice, just a tiny bit of disappointment. Whatever else happened in their memories, he and Tony had needed each other here. They were on good terms, here.

But he takes a breath and straightens his back, gesturing towards the room, his voice much lighter now: "You built all of this, for us. The Avengers basement, you'd named it." He smiles briefly and shakes his head at the thought.

"It's taken me a long time to sort out what I believe and don't believe, especially after they took you. The best I could come up with is that our bodies are most likely, manufactured somehow." He doesn't want to say clones, because he doesn't quite believe that's what's happening. "I've seen a man blow himself and come back the next day completely unscathed."

A beat.

"But these memories we have. The ones that the Computer calls glitches? I believe they're real." Another beat. "I think they happened sometime before we woke up here — days, weeks, maybe even years in the past. But I believe they happened."
