It's the perfect way to ask him. Even if Steve is running his own investigation right now, the fact that Tony mentions having taken a few punches in the Commissary reminds Steve of the broken rib and how much he wants Tony to take it easy for at least a day.
That less-than-innocent glint in Tony's eyes makes him smile knowingly though, because Steve realizes right then that if he wants Tony to rest, he's going to have to spend the whole day with him. Not that he doesn't want to — god, he can barely let himself think about how much he wants to — but when it comes to weighing what he should do against what he wants to do, this might be the first time in a long while that they've been one in the same.
"You? Rest?" he asks teasingly as their lips part once again, but Steve is already nuzzling himself into Tony's curls. "If you promise you'll actually rest," he says softly, pausing for a moment before adding: "-for part of the day. Then I'll call it in for you."
