Family, stability... The guy who wanted all that went in the ice 75 years ago. I think someone else came out.
He said that to Tony once, a long time ago, and he'd meant it then. After Steve woke up from the ice, he'd felt lost in a way no one else could understand. How could he hope for stability when the very fabric of time had been pulled out from beneath his feet? How could he want a family ... when the person he'd wanted one with had already lived her life to the fullest?
But a lot has happened between now and then, and Steve isn't the same person that bid Tony farewell from the SHIELD compound over a year ago.
While it would take lot more for this century to feel like home, Steve's finally started to adjust to life within it. There are certain habits he'll never be rid of — like calling every dame he meets m'am — but there are other things he's comfortable with now that a few years ago, he never thought would be the case. And maybe that has nothing to do with the time period, but instead with time passing, and Steve getting a chance to discover who he is all over again.
When he thinks of family and stability now — especially as Tony's thumb brushes against his neck — those things no longer feel so out of reach. Still unattainable, maybe. But finally, Steve has stopped seeing family and stability as only remnants of the past.
It's why when Tony says that he likes the view, that he could get used to it, Steve can't stop grinning, and he can't seem to stop looking at Tony with a certain affection in his eyes. In fact, he gets dangerously close to saying something Steve knows no one should ever say on a first date-
But then he feels those legs wrapping around him and Steve breathes out a nervous yet tender laugh. No one's been allowed to have their legs around Steve like this before, that's for certain, but he can't help but notice that it feels a very comfortable kind of secure. And this time, when he tilts his chin up for another kiss, Steve can't help but realize that with Tony's legs wrapped around him, it would be so incredibly easy to pick Tony up right now.
