Her response probably shouldn't be surprising considering how vaguely he'd worded his preface, but it still takes Derek off guard and, for a second, he doesn't answer, trying to wrap his head around what she's doing. Then it clicks; her expression and follow-up confirm it.

"No, no," he assures her. "No, not...not like that. That's not what I meant," he adds.

Okay, how to breach this subject. If the wolf is still in there, then eventually, he'll have access. At least, he's definitely hoping for access. The wolf is a fundamental part of Derek and he's never spent this much time separated from it the way he is. It's both maddening and terrifying to have his identity so easily ripped away from him only to find out that it's absolutely still there, he just can't touch it of his own accord.

But all of that had been the driving force to him not saying anything to Katniss about it. What was the point in telling her he's a werewolf if he isn't, anymore? Well...now he realizes he is, the wolf is just out of reach.

"It's...there's something about me that I haven't said anything about because I didn't...realize it was still a part of me. But during that fight, I felt it again; I know it's still somewhere inside me and I don't know if what I am will be a dealbreaker for you. So I don't really want to tell you, but you deserve to know that I'm not...actually a human being. Not like you are," he says, brow creasing slightly. And because he knows that things are different where some people come from; even Alcide's werewolf is different than his, so for all he knows, she might not even know that it's a thing. "...have you ever heard of a werewolf?"
