Katniss had found it hard to leave Prim's side that evening. It didn't matter that her sister had ultimately been better equipped to deal with the incident than Katniss had been. Her sister hadn't frozen the way that she had. Her sister hadn't been completely useless. For most of the night, her pride in Prim warred with the anger she felt at herself. In the end, anger won. Especially when Katniss had realized she had forgotten to check on everyone else she remotely likes.
Tonight isn't the time. She realizes that when a nightmare jolts her awake and she realizes that she had fallen asleep outside of Prim's room. It's not the first time she's ignored the Computer's warnings about curfew but it is the first time she hasn't been in a proper bedroom. Katniss has been too consumed with making up for her lapse during the riot that she had forgotten to play it safe. She had forgotten about everyone else.
Derek doesn't seem to blame her. He greets her with a tired look of empathy but no hint of anger. Right now, she probably feels enough for the both of them. Katniss kicks off her shoes before slipping under the covers. Her stomach presses against his and she wraps arms around his shoulder in a tight hug. He's all right. She should have checked on him sooner but it doesn't matter. He's all right.
Katniss presses her lips against his, the kiss meant to be comforting in the same way his always are. It's a little bit hungry instead. She pulls away a few seconds later. "I'm sorry I didn't check on you sooner."
