Sadly, this isn’t something you can try on a dummy. It won’t feel the same, and it won’t react in the same way. The best way to learn is with someone you trust.

“Yes you can,” he reaffirms, and when she asks for what to do, Steve begins.

“First, you’ll wanna put your fingers around my trachea. Four on one side, your thumb on the other. Just like you would if you were gonna grab something with your hand. Yeah- keep your fingers a little straighter- yes- a little further apart, right along the outside- Yeah, that’s it.”

Steve swallows, not on purpose, but Lydia will be able to feel it.

“Now slowly, I want you to just push your fingers into my neck. Just straight back, and don’t worry, this won’t hurt. I’ll tell you when to stop.”

She doesn’t have to go far, but the problem most beginners have with this move is that they’re too scared to go far enough. Because as soon as Lydia’s fingers begin to really push, she’s going to meet resistance, and the boundaries between his windpipe and the rest of his neck will get fuzzier, not clearer.

But about half an inch past resistance, that’s as far as she needs to push. “Alright. That’s good.” So far, none of this is enough to make anyone uncomfortable. If Lydia tries it on herself later, she should be able to tell too. All she’d feel is pressure, but no pain.

Steve pauses just to check in, to make sure everything’s still alright. If she doesn’t given any indication that she wants to stop, he’ll keep going after that.
