When he sees the confusion in her expression, and then sees Lydia’s shake her head, Steve realizes that she doesn’t know — almost at the same time as when Lydia confirms the thought out loud. After the messages he’d received today, he thought that surely the woman’s assassination had leaked everywhere, but it’s obvious now that it hadn’t. It makes sense, looking back. If Lydia had known, she probably wouldn’t have shown him those commercials without at least asking if he was okay.
“She’s been assassinated.” He doesn’t take that part lightly, but Steve knows the irony in those words. His assassin had been assassinated.
But that isn’t what Steve wants to tell her, and Lydia can probably tell. He still looks like he has something more important to say. And she’s right. This is information that no one else knows, at least not the other Specials, and she … well, Steve will find out soon if Lydia wants to know.
“I had gone to visit her for the first time yesterday afternoon. She’d looked familiar, but it wasn’t until I heard her voice that I realized- All those months ago, when we were doing PDC training, she was the person you’d ID’d.”
A beat, as Steve looks between Lydia’s eyes. He seems concerned for her, but not scared, like he expects her to have some reaction, but he doesn’t expect her to break down.
“Her name was Marina.” A beat. “I don’t think the Computer is going to bring her back.”
