The gas helps Katniss fall asleep but she never stays asleep all that long. The nightmares are just too intense sometimes and they wake her regardless of the chemical influence. It would be nice if it stayed working throughout the night. But Katniss isn't that lucky. Not in the ways it really counts.

She feels a twinge of guilt at the look that crosses her sister's face. Katniss probably should have lied to her. But she's a horrible liar and Prim knows her better than anyone else here. Her sister would figure it out in an instance. So she just grins sadly and shrugs.

"You know I would," Katniss says, reaching out to take her sister's hands in hers and squeezing them gently. It's not that she doesn't want Prim to take care of her. It's more that she doesn't want to burden her sister anymore than necessary. She takes a breath and smiles again, albeit this time a little bashfully. "There's a boy. He usually holds me at night."
