Dipping his head down to nuzzle his nose against hers for a second before kissing her, Derek gives her a little squeeze when he feels her squirm a little. He gets the feeling that it's her way of telling him she doesn't want to answer and that's why she didn't in the first place, so he isn't going to force it by prodding again. But then she does answer and he pulls back a little to look down at her, stroking her hair against her head when he's not able to look her in the eye.
"Well, for what it's worth, I wouldn't want you to be anyone else, either," he says softly. "I like you as you. And I know that feeling, like you're always drowning in your own mistakes, but you're right. Being someone else wouldn't solve it. It wouldn't change the feeling." He pauses for a moment before continuing. "You don't have to be someone else just because you're stuck with parts of their life in your head, though. If that's even really what's happening to us.
