Her assumptions are right in that Steve’s office offers a little more privacy than normal. Internal Security doesn’t have cameras or audio receivers in here, but ultimately, Armed Forces does. Nothing is supposed to be secret from the Computer, after all. But it’s better than being outside, that’s for certain.

Steve though, seems at least happy to hear that there’s nothing wrong on patrol. But when she asks that question, his previously strained smile because a real one.

“Buffy,” he says, chuckling once, “It’s possible that maybe you know me a little too well.”

He glances behind her, past the glass window in his door, out towards commotion that surrounds them. And then he looks back at Buffy.

“I’m waiting on a forensics report.” It’s the most important thread he’s pulling on at the moment, but he can’t tell her why, not here in his office. Not if the report confirms his suspicions. And Steve … well, his expression seems to be trying to communicate some of that in the way he looks at her, and how he subtly tilts his head as he speaks. There’s more he’s willing to say, but he can’t right now.

“I’ll feel better once I get the results.”

What do forensics reports say, Buffy? Reports on the injury, what substances are involved, how the victim died. But the most important detail to Steve that day, is one simple fact. Time of death.

He knows he’s not giving her a lot to go on here, but Steve already suspects that even if IntSec can’t be watching him, someone else might be. He doesn’t want to put Buffy in the crosshairs too.
